City Welcomes New Fire Chief

DUNCAN – The City of Duncan is pleased to announce the appointment of Landis Carmichael as the new Fire Chief of the Duncan Fire Department. Chief Carmichael brings over 15 years of experience in emergency services to his new role. He holds a Fire Officer Certificate Level 4 from the Justice Institute of British Columbia and a Master of Arts Degree in Disaster and Emergency Management from Royal Roads University.

“We are thrilled to have Chief Carmichael join our team,” said Peter de Verteuil, Chief Administrative Officer. “His extensive experience and dedication to the fire service make him an excellent choice to lead our department.”

Chief Carmichael served 12 years as a volunteer with Langford Fire Rescue and worked 6 years as a 9-1-1 Emergency Dispatcher for the Capital Regional District Fire Dispatch Center, covering 19 different fire departments.  He has most recently served as Fire Chief/Director of Emergency Services in Iqaluit, Nunavut managing both career and volunteer firefighters and paramedics.

“I am honored to have been selected as the new Fire Chief for the City of Duncan Fire Department,” said Chief Carmichael. “I look forward to working with the dedicated men and women of the department to continue to provide the highest level of service to the community.  I want to build on the familial atmosphere that is so cherished in a Volunteer Department, particularly here in Duncan.”

Chief Carmichael will assume his new role on April 17, 2023.

The City of Duncan would like to extend its appreciation to retiring Chief Art Sanderson, who has served as the Fire Chief for the past 2 years and has made significant contributions to the department and the community.  We wish Art all the best in his upcoming travels!
