Commitment to a Safe Workplace

GOAL

The City of Duncan is committed to promoting a safe and healthy workplace and environment for its employees and to establish and maintain safe working practices through proper procedures and direction. Safety is everyone’s responsibility. It rests with all levels of Management and each employee.

Our staff is our most important resource and there is no job or service that is so urgent, or important, that it cannot be done safely. The following is a general outline of the responsibilities that have been assigned to help achieve the goal of making Duncan a safe and healthy municipality to work in.

POLICY:

Management:

It shall be the responsibility of Management to establish and maintain a comprehensive occupational health and safety program that meets or exceeds all the requirements of applicable health and safety legislation. This program includes such areas as adequate standards, policies, procedures, work practices and maintenance of buildings and equipment to provide a safe working environment, ensuring that their managers are instructed and trained in safe working practices, and promoting a positive attitude towards accident/injury prevention within the organization through leading by example.

Supervisors:

It shall be the responsibility of supervisors to ensure that employees are instructed and trained in safe work practices to ensure compliance with the established City of Duncan policies and procedures. They shall ensure that regular safety inspections of their equipment are performed and take appropriate action to rectify any problems.

Employees:

It shall be the responsibility of each and every City employee to: take reasonable care to ensure their own safety and the safety of others; to know and follow all safety and health regulations and the established City of Duncan policies and procedures; to work in a prudent and safe manner; and to correct or to report any unsafe, potentially unsafe, or sub standard condition or action as soon as possible.

Health and Safety Committee Members:

It shall be the responsibility of Committee members to promote safe work practices and conditions and to assist in creating a positive attitude and a safe place of work by recommending actions which will improve the effectiveness of the Occupational Health and Safety Program.

Contractors:

It is the responsibility of all City contractors to know and adhere to the City’s OH&S Program Rules and Safe Work Procedures that apply to their contract work.

Employees Legislated Rights:

  • Right to Refuse – Work that is unsafe
  • Right to Know – about hazards you may encounter in the course of doing work
  • Right to Participate – in your own worksite/workplace safety and health

Management, Safety and Health representatives, and all Employees will abide by our Occupational Health and Safety Program for the City of Duncan and the Workers Compensation Act and its regulations.
