New Chief Administrative Officer Announced

The City of Duncan is very pleased to announce the appointment of its new Chief Administrative Officer, Mr. Peter de Verteuil, CGA.

Mr. de Verteuil is a long time Cowichan Valley resident who takes great pride in being a part of our local government system and our community. Council is confident that Mr. de Verteuil has demonstrated that he possesses the skills and desire to deliver on Council’s goals. Council conducted a thorough competition for the CAO position, with many applicants, and felt that Mr. de Verteuil was the best choice to lead the City.

Mr. de Verteuil has a finance background, and has strived to be and worked towards the Chief Administrative Officer position since first coming to the City of Duncan in late 2004 as the Director of Finance. Prior to this, Mr. de Verteuil spent three years at the Town of Lake Cowichan, and the prior two years at the Cowichan Valley Regional District. These local government years coupled with his many years in public practice, have given him a varied background and a strong ability to interact well with residents, the business and development community, co‐workers, staff and the media.

Mayor Kent commented, “Mr. de Verteuil has demonstrated his abilities as a progressive, hard‐working team player that gets results. I am confident he will ensure that the directions set by Council will be carried out efficiently and effectively. He has the respect of all staff for his forthright and open style of leadership.”

During his eight years with the City as Director of Finance, Mr. de Verteuil has held the additional positions of Deputy CAO and Deputy Director of Corporate Services, working very closely with Council and senior staff, and has carried out all these roles in an exceptional manner, earning the confidence of Mayor, Council and staff.

Mr. de Verteuil stated, “I am truly thankful that Council has put their trust in me, and am looking forward to the challenge of leading the City and working closely with Council to achieve their goals and vision.“

Outgoing CAO Tom Ireland has served the City extremely well in his 7 years with the City of Duncan, and will be retiring on April 26, 2013.  Mr. de Verteuil’s appointment will be effective April 27, 2013.

Council will meet with Mr. de Verteuil to review priorities in relation to the Strategic Plan prior to April 27, 2013. “It is important to keep the plan fresh; it is a living document. Having worked with Council closely, I know that open and transparent government and communication is a priority. Something I will also be discussing is continuing our efforts in the area of efficiency and openness in the Development Approvals process.” noted Mr. de Verteuil. “I believe that my background and experience in finance, business, and other local governments will serve the City well as we move forward in working creatively and cooperatively with the business and development community and our neighbouring jurisdictions.”
