Residents Donate $15,993 to Charities by Recycling at CVRD Recycling Centres

When refundable beverage containers are recycled at Bings Creek Recycling Centre in Duncan and Peerless Road Recycling Centre in Ladysmith, all deposits are donated by the Cowichan Valley Regional District (CVRD) to the Island Return It Charity of the Month Program.

“The CVRD has been a part of this program since 2014,” explains Board Chair Jon Lefebure. “In 2016, more than $15,000 was donated to charities with the help of local residents. It’s a great program because it’s convenient for residents to drop off refundable containers at CVRD recycling facilities while they are recycling other items and it also provides support to local community organizations.”

The Charity of the Month Program was established by the Island Return It Recycling Centre and Bottle Depot over 15 years ago and provides donations to a number of local charities. For example, deposits from refundable containers brought to CVRD Recycling Centres in November 2016 were donated to Cowichan Family Life and deposits collected in December 2016 were donated to the Cowichan Valley Basket Society. Other charities that have benefitted from this program include Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Cowichan Valley and the BC SPCA Cowichan and District Branch.

Donations of refundable beverage containers for the Charity of the Month Program can be dropped off at Bings Creek Recycling Centre and Peerless Road Recycling Centre as well as Island Return It Recycling Centre in Duncan.
