Construction Begins on New Parking Lot at 177 Third Street

The City of Duncan is increasing the supply of parking spaces in downtown Duncan with a new parking lot at 177 Third Street.  Construction will begin on March 31st to convert the property into a gravel pay parking lot that will improve access to downtown for residents and visitors, supporting local businesses and community events.

“The downtown area serves as the vibrant heart of our community, and this project is an example of our commitment to improving urban functionality while safeguarding and preserving our tree canopy wherever possible,” said Mayor Michelle Staples. “And we get an additional 21 new parking spaces in walking distance of businesses within and outside of the downtown core, all achieved in an environmentally responsible and cost-effective manner.”

The project will retain nearly all existing trees on the site and follow recommendations from an arborist report to protect the trees’ health. Only the centrally located cherry tree on the west side must be removed to accommodate the parking lot design. The second cherry tree will be retained with selective pruning to remove overhanging branches. The site will be carefully graded to maintain natural soil levels near the trees, ensuring that topsoil removal does not exceed 10 cm above the tree roots. This precise approach will minimize root disturbance.
