New Trees Coming to Duncan’s City Square

The City of Duncan is moving forward with the planned replacement of 5 American sweetgum trees in City Square to improve safety and preserve City Square as a welcoming and beautiful gathering space in downtown Duncan.

Beginning on Friday, April 4, work will include the replacement of the existing trees in the middle of the parking aisle with 3 new autumn fantasy maple trees which are better suited to this location. The project is expected to be complete by mid-April.

“Preserving City Square as a vibrant community gathering place is a top priority for the City. We really appreciate the community’s support in understanding why this had to happen, and even more so for taking part in the process to select the new species to be planted,” said Mayor Michelle Staples. “Staff worked hard to source trees that are already a substantial size and well on their way to providing a welcoming canopy for downtown shoppers, the Duncan Farmers’ Market, and the many wonderful events hosted here throughout the spring and summer months.”

Autumn fantasy maple trees are known for their striking seasonal colour changes, fast growth rates, and ability to thrive in urban environments. This tree replacement project is the last step in renewing the trees in this area to address safety concerns posed by the existing trees.
