Dealing with Extreme Heat and Wildfire Smoke

When temperatures rise during the summer, it is important to know the risks associated with excessive heat and take precautions to stay safe and healthy.  Check out the updated heat-related information on the Island Health website including how to protect yourself from the sun and where you might find a cooling station.

The current high to extreme fire danger means the potential for wildfires locally and drifting smoke from elsewhere blanketing the region resulting in health effects on individuals.  The following links provide access to data and further information:

Air Quality Advisory – posted on the BC Ministry of Environment website when pollutant concentrations approach or exceed predetermined limits, or when degraded-air-quality episodes are expected to continue or worsen.

BC Asthma Prediction System (BCAPS) – is an interactive online mapping system to support health protection during wildfire smoke events.

Air Quality Health Index (AQHI) – provides hourly air quality readings and related health messages.

To empower individuals, the BC Centre for Disease Control offers the following advice and 10 steps to get ready for wildfire smoke.

BC Fire Danger Rating – the fire danger rating (ie: the risk of wildfire starting) for the province is updated daily at approximately 2:00 p.m.
