Council Update – February 24, 2025
The City of Duncan Council Update is a snapshot of items considered at meetings of Council. These are not the official minutes. Meeting agendas, minutes, and videos can be accessed through the City’s Council Meeting Portal.
- Staff Sergeant Beard, Officer in Charge, provided a 2024 Fourth Quarter Report from the North Cowichan-Duncan RCMP Detachment.
- Council received the report of the Chief Administrative Officer that includes updates on a number of City initiatives.
- Fire Chief Carmichael provided a 2024 Fourth Quarter Report from the Duncan Fire Department, and delivered the fire safety message that it’s never to early to FireSmart your property.
- Council awarded several tenders for the implementation of protected bike lanes on Coronation Avenue, Queens Road, and Ypres Street.
- Council authorized staff to proceed with the purchase of automated solid waste collection carts for garbage, recycling, and organic waste for the implementation of automated curbside collection service anticipated to begin this spring.
- Council approved amendments to the Purchasing Policy.
- Council approved the withdrawal of its resolution submitted to the 2025 Association of Vancouver Island and Coastal Communities Annual General Meeting and Convention, and directed staff to instead prepare a joint letter with North Cowichan requesting that all regional governing bodies be provided the opportunity to participate in consultation on the future use of the current Cowichan District Hospital site.
- Council approved the 2025 Tourism Budget recommended by the Tourism Advisory Committee.
- Council approved three readings of Servicing Officers Bylaw No. 3255, 2025, a bylaw to designate servicing officers for the City of Duncan.
A Committee of the Whole meeting will be held on Monday, March 3, 2025 to consider the 2025 tax rate.
The next Regular Council meeting will be on Monday, March 10, 2025.
