Local Government Awareness Week and National Public Works Week
Duncan, BC – This year, the City of Duncan is recognizing Local Government Awareness Week (May 11–17) and National Public Works Week (May 18-24) to build awareness of the vital role local governments play in shaping the quality of life of residents.
Local governments are responsible for essential services such as clean drinking water, fire protection, parks and recreation, waste collection, and land use planning. They also shape communities by listening to the needs of residents, setting local policies, and delivering programs that support livability, sustainability, and economic development.
“Our little City is a great place to live. It’s our responsibility as a Council to ensure the character of Duncan continues to reflect the vision of the people who live here,” said Duncan Acting Mayor Garry Bruce. “Municipalities play an important part in shaping the community and evaluating the costs of providing services. That vision is clearest when people are engaged, and I am disappointed that during the last local election only 22% of our residents cast a ballot,” Acting Mayor Bruce continued. “I thank everyone who has provided input to the City of Duncan, and I hope people will come out to vote in the next municipal election on October 17, 2026.”
The 2025 theme for Local Government Awareness Week is “Infrastructure”. Though the City of Duncan covers a relatively small geographical area of just 2 square kilometres, it operates infrastructure with a value exceeding half a billion dollars. The City’s Public Works and Engineering Department undertakes the critical work to plan and maintain the City’s infrastructure, and our dedicated Finance staff support this work through careful financial planning over the long term in accordance with the City’s asset management plan.
The City of Duncan is dedicated to open communication with residents and offers several ways to stay connected and learn more about the City’s projects and initiatives.
