National Truth & Reconciliation Day – September 30
On September 30th, the M’akola Housing Society will be hosting an Every Child Matters March.
It is recommended participants carpool, as event organizers expect to have a large turnout of participants. Parking is available in the fields behind Vancouver Island University (2011 University Way, North Cowichan).
Southbound traffic, exit off the Trans-Canada Highway right into the Cowichan Rec. Centre (big hockey stick) parking lot, and park in the fields.
Northbound traffic from Trans-Canada turn left on James Street, and enter right through the Cowichan Rec. Centre parking lot (big hockey stick) and park in the fields.
Registration begins at 8:00 a.m. at Vancouver Island University.
The March start line is at Vancouver Island University/University Roundabout. Children will line up first, then Elders, and then public to follow. First Aid will be along the route, and a City of Duncan fire vehicle will follow the March. The March will end at Cowichan Tribes, Si’em Lelum soccer fields on River Road, with post-events planned.
Traffic control will be along the route to safely guide pedestrians and vehicles; detour routes will be in place. It is requested that all vehicles parked on the street route be removed by 8:00 a.m. If your vehicle is parked on the street, you may be towed to a nearby street or blocked in by the march for short time. For safety, no vehicles are permitted to move within the march of people.

9:05 a.m. Welcome
9:15 a.m. Prayer
9:30 a.m. Walk starts at University Way round-about. Line up: First Children, Second Elders, and then public behind.
City Centre Square Stage: Memorial items to be placed; shoes, teddy bear, etc. Items will remain on stage until October 15, 2021.
End: Cowichan Tribes, Si’em Lelum Soccer Fields on River Road
Post-event: Stage of performances; dancing, singing and music; food trucks
