City Hires New Director of Public Works and Engineering

DUNCAN – The City of Duncan is very pleased to announce the selection of the new Director of Public Works and Engineering, Mr. Brian Murphy, P. Eng.

Mr. Murphy is a Professional Engineer and comes to the City with more than twenty years of experience in management and engineering, in both the municipal and energy sectors.  Mr. Murphy has significant experience in utility operations and management and has demonstrated a sound understanding of municipal government having been previously at the City of Medicine Hat and, most recently, at the City of Victoria as the Assistant Director, Public Works.

The City held a competition for the Director of Public Works and Engineering through September 2020. Out of numerous applications, Mr. Murphy’s knowledge and experience provided the best fit for the City of Duncan. Mr. Murphy’s first day will be October 28, 2020.

“The Director of Public Works and Engineering is a key position on the senior management team. We are extremely fortunate to have Mr. Murphy come to the City in this role,” said Chief Administrative Officer, Peter de Verteuil. “He has extensive knowledge of the local government, strong engineering and leadership background, and will be a great asset to the corporate culture here at the City.”

Mr. Murphy has replaced retired Director of Public Works and Development Services, Emmet McCusker, who was with the City since 2017. After some deliberation, it was decided to post the position as a “Director of Public Works and Engineering” to enable the position to focus more time on leading those two departments.
