Council Update – July 15, 2024

The City of Duncan Council Update is a snapshot of items considered at meetings of Council. These are not the official minutes. Meeting agendas, minutes, and videos can be accessed through the City’s Council Meeting Portal.

• Council received the report of the Chief Administrative Officer that included updates on a number of City initiatives.
• The Cowichan Valley Arts Council gave a presentation on their activities and information on their upcoming Art Market.
• Council received a Strategic Plan Actions Status Update Report, detailing the City’s progress on the priorities identified by Council in the 2023-2026 Council Strategic Plan.
• Council received a 2024 Budget Update on the City’s revenues and expenditures for the period January 1 – June 30, 2024.
• Council awarded a tender to Vimar Equipment Ltd. for $700,597 plus taxes and 2% for contingency and outfitting for a replacement vactor truck unit.
• Council approved a new primary gateway sign to be installed at the south entrance to the City of Duncan in conjunction with the silver bridge to 140 Trans-Canada Highway multi-use pathway project. The new design for the welcome sign includes the Hul’q’umi’num’ greeting “Mi nuw’ilum”.
• Council authorized a five-year lease of 820 Wharncliffe Road to Parkside Academy Childcare Society for the purpose of operating childcare at the property. The rental income of $500/month will be deposited into a reserve fund for major building repairs at 820 Wharncliffe Road at the end of every year.
• Council directed staff to submit an application for the ChildCare BC New Spaces Fund, with the support of Parkside Academy Childcare Society, to establish a new childcare facility in McAdam Park, in the immediate vicinity of the existing building at 820 Wharncliffe Road.
• Council gave first three readings to 2024 Financial Plan Bylaw Amendment Bylaw No. 3241.01, 2024 to amend the financial plan for 2024-2028.
• Council proclaimed September 12, 2024 as United Way BC Day in the City of Duncan.
